HERCULES #1
Publisher: MARVEL COMICS
(W) Dan Abnett (A) Luke Ross (CA) TBD
Rated T+ -I don't know how Marvel rates things, because I didn't see this needing even a "T" rating-
MSRP: $3.99
Synopsis:
The World's first super hero decides it's time to get back in the game, protect the innocent, defend the world, and generally remind everyone why he set the mark for heroism in the first place. Make way... Hercules is back! The greatest son of Olympus is thrown into the fight against threats ancient and modern, and Hercules demonstrates that a legend, no matter how strong he is, survives on his experience, and his ability to move with the times. A modern world, an age-old hero... and blockbuster action!

Seasoned vet Dan Abnett joins with the art team of ALL-NEW INVADERS for what I think is going to be a sleeper hit. I had zero expectations starting this issue, but it was able to unload a ton of exposition without feeling heavy-handed. By the end of this first ish, I added it to my pull-list. Part Hero-For-Hire part Xena, Hercules has embraced modern fighting tech (wait until you see his weapons room) but has more experience fighting as a hero than anyone out there. I expect to see some great character development/comedy from his dead-beat roommate demi-god Gilgamesh.

Wow! Do you love the segments on THE DAILY SHOW where they make fun of Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC? Then this is the comic for you. This first ish had me audibly laughing (not an easy task these days) with its satiric take on two words "cable goddamned news." I'm guessing we will see A and mirrored B stories with Jack and the Fire Fight news team. Jack's a mess and is dealing is his own demon... literally. My favorite line from the book was the introduction of the news team with the word bubble, "Coming up, terrorist cells buying marijuana with food stamps -- IN YOUR BACK YARD!" And of course I went with the Chip Zdarsky variant cover.

The Terregin Mist that transformed so many seemingly dormant Inhumans into NuHumans is also killing mutants. On top of that, it has sterilized mutantkind. The book is very clear to point out "THERE WILL NE NO NEW MUTANTS EVER AGAIN." So it's up to Storm to get a functioning X-Team back together to protect the last of the mutants, as they are now being hunted openly. Humerto Ramos's art sold this book for me. His new take on Collosus alone put this book into my ongoing pull list. Plus, OLD MAN LOGAN!
