GOLEM - Graphic Novel Review
“Golem” by contemporary design icon Lorenzo Cecotti, aka “LRNZ,” is a political-sci-fi graphic novel with visual stylings influenced by both manga and western comics. Previously released in Italian, the English edition of the 280-page graphic novel was released in March of 2016. “Golem” employs different visual techniques wielded by a master craftsman to simply tell a story about the complexities of social strata.
Set in a future, post-Eurozone Italy, “Golem” follows Steno, young boy kidnapped during a political protest, who learns that he has the power to not only change the city, but the state of the human condition.
“Golem” is deeply embedded with visual symbolism. LRNZ’s went to great lengths to make every choice in his art mean something. The creator explained this to his publisher Magnetic Press:
Golem is a weird convergence of visual needs.
Every one of those needs was urging me to find a very specific solution for each of them. First of all, I do believe in the reader’s visual powers and culture. The human brain is a pattern-spotting machine. I could’ve used a much more pedantic approach to the novel’s structure: heavy use of captions, textual aids to set time and space, deranging the reader from the deep experience that visuals can deliver.
I decided to use a more subtle approach instead, one that enriches vision and leave the textual storytelling to an almost empty state. That gives the viewer all the information he needs without having to explain anything, using a multi-layer channel. Exploiting the reader’s ability to make sense out of complex visual information. Dreaming, flashbacks, augmented reality, vision of the future, insanely fast action, daydreaming: they are all rendered in a very specific technique to make a deal with the reader, to set a reading pattern that needs no explanations. The graphic novel contains an appendix of sorts that explains much of the symbolism in the book. Perhaps a bit heavy-handed for some readers, the addition of the appendix makes “Golem” a perfect candidate for use in a classroom.
“Golem” was LRNZ’s first full-length graphic novel, an ambitious taking for any artist. However, the design icon is no stranger to visual narrative. He is also author and artist to man imaginative animated shorts which were perfect for cutting his teeth.
“Animation is a state of mind (that helps making 100+ pages of comics seem like nothing!).”

Nostalgia is a powerful motivator. It’s easy to tie emotion into the tangible things that were once so important to us. There was never a decade which put more importance on “things” than did the 80’s. There is a trend in pop culture right now to hook audiences with the personal nostalgia we associate with that decade so obsessed with stuff: THE GOLDBERGS, COMIC BOOK MEN, the whole concept of retro gaming, etc. And while I just listed two of my favorite television shows – and you better believe I own the HD-remastings of DUCKTALES and STREET FIGHTER II, the aforementioned pieces of popular culture aren’t ground-breaking new concepts.
PAPER GIRLS, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan (writer
of SAGA and Y: THE LAST MAN) and Cliff Chiang (artist of BEWARE THE CREEPER and
WONDER WOMAN) delivers a new story peppered with enough nostalgic references
that readers will swear they’ve read it before, not having a clue of what is
coming on the next page.

A Spider-Man For Everyone!
Spider-Man has been through a lot the past few years: Doc Ock took over his body/mind (Superior Spider-Man), then he came back only to be thrust into the Spider Verse, and now he's almost an Iron Man-type as the CEO of Parker Industries. Remember when he struggled to fight the Sandman and get Aunt May milk and eggs?
The new Spider-Man comic book series, Spidey, takes us back to those lighter, less universe-changing days of the web slinger. This is a fun comic book that I feel any fan of the 'ole web head can pick up and enjoy.

THE STORY OF MY TITS
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't been affected in some way by this cancer (with more than 1.5 million cases diagnosed each year).
Cancer is a daunting problem that leaves its victims and their loved ones feeling helpless. Sometimes sharing a funny story or being the shoulder for support is the only help that you can give.
Jennifer Hayden's graphic novel THE STORY OF MY TITS is a funny, relateable and very honest memoir that will have readers smiling, nodding, and perhaps even crying.
Now, their story has become a way of understanding her story: a journey from the innocence of youth to the chaos of adulthood, through her mother’s mastectomy, her father’s mistress, her husband’s music, and the endlessly evolving definition of family.
As cancer strikes three different lives, some relationships crumble while others emerge even stronger, and this sarcastic child of the ‘70s finally finds a goddess she can believe in.
For everyone who’s faced cancer personally, or watched a loved one fight that battle, Hayden’s story is a much-needed breath of fresh air, an irresistible blend of sweetness and skepticism. Rich with both symbolism & humor, The Story of My Tits will leave you laughing, weeping, and feeling grateful for every day. -- a 352-page softcover graphic novel with French flaps (B&W Interiors), 8” x 8”

Jennifer Hayden's graphic novel THE STORY OF MY TITS is a funny, relateable and very honest memoir that will have readers smiling, nodding, and perhaps even crying.
"Heartbreaking and riveting, Jennifer Hayden's caustic, sarcastic wit streams through her quirky drawings, unfolding a survivor's tale and so much more. The Story of My Tits takes us from her flat-chested adolescence to small-boobed acceptance, then loss - until the dramatic reconstruction of Jennifer herself." —Marisa Acocella Marchetto, author of Cancer Vixen and Ann Tenna
"[Hayden's] honesty is blistering: every panel is a densely inked peek into the gory details of womanhood, from breastfeeding to breast cancer... Her knack for dreamlike imagery is a delightful counterpoint to this frankness... It is this combination of surrealism and an unflinching commitment to candor that elevates this memoir beyond simple confessional into something truly moving." — Publishers Weekly (starred review)
"There’s a theme that runs through her beautifully intimate graphic memoir that we can all relate to... Hayden recounts the story of her life by telling us the story of her breasts, as a way to explore body image, relationships, and cancer." — Marie Claire
“The pacing of her storytelling is seamless... Hayden’s memoir will resonate with anyone who has suffered loss and gone on to tell the tale.” — Booklist
"Fabulous... for a story that cancer twines through, it is delightfully hilarious. Hayden has a gift." — Foreword ReviewsWhen Jennifer Hayden was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43, she realized that her tits told a story. Across a lifetime, they’d held so many meanings: hope and fear, pride and embarrassment, life and death. And then they were gone.

Things to Doodle and Do!
Bravest Warriors is one of the best all-ages animated series out there. Best part is, it's all on YouTube! Check out the first episode from Season 01:
The comic book series is just as great. Along with the comics and graphic novels, Cartoon Hangover has put out an activity book that is not only fun and engaging, but it also pushes readers to create their own creations inside the Bravest Warriors universe. It's a heck of a lot more than lame non-activity books we remember from our youth (stupid mazes and connect the dots pages).
We are selling the book on ebay starting at just $5.00.

“Sacco demonstrates that the narrative arts, including comics, can gather up complicated social truths with a gradual patience that often eludes the camera.” —The Boston Globe
Cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco recounts his experiences at the end of the brutal Bosnian War. In the lead story, Sacco introduces Neven, a charismatic man who makes a shady living for cash, cigarettes, food or alcohol by leading reporters through Bosnia's war-torn landscape. Sacco crossed paths with disparate figures from the Balkan conflict, from Radovan Karadzic, the notorious war criminal, to Soba, a young Sarajevan struggling to recover from the trauma of war and renew his creative ambitions. In this collection, which contains the previously published hardcovers THE FIXER and WAR'S END, the acclaimed author of SAFE AREA GORAZDE uses his award-wining comics reportage to uncover the compelling and uncompromising war stories that do not make the evening news.

The early history of motorcycles closely parallels that of automobiles. Being far simper devices, however, motorcycles lent themselves to wider development by backyard mechanics, whose first efforts typically involved little more than strapping a small "store-bought" motor to their bicycle.
These pioneering souls were often the first in their town to experience the thrill of motorized travel, and many were asked to build duplicate machines by admiring neighbors.
Though automobiles ultimately proved more popular, motorcycles provided riders a feeling no four-wheeler could duplicate, and it is this free-spirited excitement that is captured in this book.

Juggling mutant horseshoe crabs, new girlfriends, and more, Rob and the gang are back in this collection of the first all-new arc of BOB FINGERMAN's slice-of-life series.

--Bleeding Cool
"One of the sharpets looks at the human struggle that mainstream comics will produce this year. Not bad for a comic that seeded its roots int he very specific '90s landscape of Indie Comics. It's more relevant and personal than ever."
--Multiversity
"MINIMUM WAGE has sympathy and catharsis to offer those of us who feel like we've never quite gotten the hang of adulthood. Perhaps a more accurate warning might be, 'For reluctantly mature readers.'"
--The Daily Record
"Bob Fingerman takes the risque magic of the old underground comics and shows us that it can still be revealing."
--Newsarama
"If Proust were alive today and writing for alt-comics, I think he'd be dong the same kind of thing."

"To Say that Geof Darrow is unique is a bit of an understatement. I Think he's just plain brilliant."--Mike Mignola
"Trying to describe Geof Darrow's work to someone unfamiliar with it is a little like trying to describe a waterfall to someone who's never seen water. It's tranquil above the falls, a thrill ride down the slope, and explosively lethal at the bottom of the cataract. As with everything he does, Geof's Shaolin Cowboy takes place in a universe all its own that the rest of us are just damn lucky to visit whenever Geof gives us a peek. If you 've ever seen his work, that's what I'm talking about. And if you haven't, now's your chance to take that ride. Don't miss it."--Walter Simonson
"Geof Darrow is a master. . .His combination of technical ability and a genuinely individual voice is an inspiration for me and for generations of other artists across the world."--Frank Quitely
"Geof Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy is very intriguing in its use of diverse elements in an electric mix creating highly surreal effects. This mix of apparently opposing bits starts right with the title. I was reminded of similar themes celebrated in Metal Hurlant's classic early period of the '80s. Darrow's closely sliced action breakdowns analyze time fragments in detail just as the Cowboy slices into the zombie horde."--Richard Corben
"'In a highly illustrious career, this is Geof Darrow at his very best. No one comes even close to his superb storytelling and incredible art!' That is what Geof told me. I hope Dark Horse sends me a copy so I can see it is true."--Stan Sakai
The Saga of one man's fight against The Walking Dead as you've never seen it before!
The action never lets up as a chainsaw of events pits the comic world's favorite Shaolin Cowboy against a legion of gourmets from the fourth level of hell, intent on turning America's finest youth into an endless Shemp buffet.
Strap on your six-guns, gas up your chainsaw, and hang on, 'cuz you aren't in Downton Abbey anymore.
"Geof Darrow is without a doubt one of the best creators in our field, meticulous, a superb craftsman, and in Shaolin Cowboy Geof becomes a master choreographer, making the battle scenes a vivid and nightmarish vision of Dante's Inferno."--Sergio Aragones
"A profound sense of the absurd encapsulated in elegant line. Darrow has crafted high-definition realities since before hi-def was even a thing."--Duncan Fegredo
"Geof Darrow is the only guy I know who can draw an epic naked-zombie slaughter and and still make me feel all warm inside."--Kevin Nowlan
"A widescreen world of madness and brutality; a uniquely bonkers vision done masterfully. Truly magnificent!"--Adi Granov
"The structure, the staging and the storytelling are all atrocious... This feels like simple, hollow artistic masturbation in four colors, stapled with a barcode for the suckers to lose three fifty on."--The Comic Pusher
"It's the comic book equivalent of 'Threw It on the Ground.'"
